‘The Sensational Now’ is a luxury interiors collection, designed for a restaurant/ bar, exploring navigation through the imagery of the night sky, stars, constellations, keys and compasses.
The Coronavirus Pandemic has changed our way of life, however, as we return back to normality there is hope that life will be better and therefore is something exciting to look forward to. We are navigating our way into a new time.
This is similar to the late 19th to early 20th Century, where the 1920s saw not only industrial and technological advances but also a boost in the public’s morale and attitude towards life.
Research from The Metropolitan Museum, V&A and Tate, have led me to understand how art and textiles changed between this time, through movements; Art Nouveau and Art Deco. This also reflects on the change in behaviour and attitude towards life at the time.
This idea has influenced my collection as within the art and textile industry, 100 years on, we are in a similar situation where designs are heavily influenced from previous years but changing to suit the current social climate.
The collection explores rich colours on heavy cotton, corduroy and velvet fabrics. The contrast between graphic geometric shapes and swirling patterns inspired by artists Gustav Klimt and Vincent Van Gogh, create intricate, luxurious prints.
Within my work, I explore both hand-drawn and digital designs. My focus is on hand drawing, to produce original prints for a memorable collection.
