Final Year Project - Water Safe
Water Safe is a solution for reducing the number of deaths due to bacteria-infected water. The focus of this project is looking at people who have been displaced from their home, from internal displaced people and refugees.
The product allows a test to be conducted that will show bacterial contamination within a water source, one of the largest risks when using wild water.
One of the key points from the research was the disconnect between volunteers and users in other projects and language barriers. This product uses a pre-established schema to direct the use of the product.
The centre of the product is loaded with water, and a solution is added when the product is closed allowing for the bacteria to grow in a liquid suspension.
Minotaur Project
The minotaur project is looking at safety during Caving trips. The physical artefact and application use a loss of signal to understand when a user is in a cave and what tip they are on. The app allows people to pre-plan trips that are saved to a server, when the physical artefact loses signal, the server starts a timer and is stopped when the signal is reconnected. If the server timer ends without being reconnected details about the trip are sent to a second contact that can then decide to send the information on to cave rescue.
One issue of the project was reminding users to bring the object down with them, so designing it to be part of the common kit was the solution.
Enactus - Prep Mate
This project was a design proposal for an Enactus project. The project looks at getting people who have upper limb disabilities back into the kitchen safely.
The design uses pegs on a board to secure food and feature a bevelled top that can be used with elastic bands. The board itself is removable for cleaning and the underboard features a liquid catchment with a slanted bottom for drainage. The backplate of the board prevents food from sliding off the back and can be used to help hold food in place.
Other products use spikes to hold food but with this product, there are lower risks.
A lot of the components in this design were taken forward and used in testing.
Robyn Leflay
I am a research focused designer, with an interest in product misuse, allowing me to anticipate problems quicker and implement design interventions.
My projects often focus on the science and practicality of the project as I am quick to make connections between different stimuli. Through the university, I have had the opportunity to learn different software and understand transferable skills and shortcuts. I enjoy a challenge and learning so I am often willing to jump into new projects and opportunities.
