Capturing the aesthetics of Mediterranean Sunlight in Gibraltar.

'The sun never knew how wonderful it was until it fell on the wall of a building.’ - Louis Kahn.

As the most southern tip of Europe and only fourteen miles from Africa, the sunlight in Gibraltar is striking. There is a certain clarity and warmth to the sunlight which has consumed my work and I have utilised photography and paint to capture its essence. Each tile is a fragment of sunlight falling onto areas of Gibraltar’s architecture which are often overlooked and underappreciated. The intimacy of the paintings invites the viewer to come closer and appreciate the emotional quality of something as simple as sunlight reflecting off a window. The tiles come together to form one large painting whilst simultaneously working as individual pieces which engulf the room in warm, golden light.

Work Experience

During my placement year, I worked at Sotogrande's International Boarding House as the Resident Marketing and Admin Intern. I had several responsibilities ranging from organising social media posts and writing blogs, poster designing and being accountable for over 100 boarders. I was able to utilise my creative skills in a role that was not typical for a Fine Art student which I believe allowed me to tackle the job with a unique perspective.

In July 2020 I was assigned for the design and painting of a mural on the facade of Gibraltar's Academy of Music and Performing Arts. The wall spanned ten metres and the project involved organising road closures, scaffolding and budgeting. The response from the public upon completion was phenomenal and the mural is now part of the Gibraltar Ministry of Culture's Street Art Mural Walk.
