Space, Light, Form and Shadow
Here I was experimenting with canvas and looking at the way I could create textures that would interact with light, I ripped into the material and soaked it in water to cause wrinkles and frayed edges. I found this created interest in the image as it contained a variety of tones and textures.
Space, Light, Form and Shadow
Here I have taken direct inspiration from the shadows I made when I was looking at the way light interacted with various materials, this being a light shone through various glass objects. I suspended the piece to bring it away from the paper and into a 3D form allowing it to fall naturally into this spiral. By photographing this under a direct light I brought back the initial idea that had inspired the shape with the negative space element adding a layered effect.
Space, Light, Form and Shadow
Close up of material manipulation using canvas. The twisted form has allowed the light to create varying tones.
Space, Light, Form and Shadow
Taking inspiration from shadows I had documented during my initial research for this project and translating these into a 3D form and then bring the element of shadow back into the piece.
Space, Light, Form and Shadow
My initial research into light and shadow, looking at the patterns created when light is shone through a variety of glass objects.
Space, Light, Form and Shadow
Experimenting with methods of suspension to bring my material exploration off the table and into a 3D form. Here I used wire to pierce the canvas and the tension of this to hold the shape.
Space, Light, Form and Shadow
Here I photographed my paper form from various angles to look at the way this changes the perspective and overall impression.
Space, Light, Form and Shadow
Paper manipulation focusing on negative space and the way taking material away can add to the overall appearance once multiple elements are involved.
