Jessica Ralph

My practice, primarily moving image and photography, presents a narrative of the everyday by performing mundane, repetitive experiences within the space of the home.

My current, ongoing project focuses on my attachment to an inanimate object, my childhood teddy. Specific childhood memories and behaviours are imitated within my filmed performances, evoking feelings of nostalgia and loneliness. A contrast between ‘play’ and sadness aims to generate a tension within the viewer, often characterised by feelings of poignancy and melancholy. My exploration of these themes acts as a framework to better understand my own experiences and ‘self’.

Through various methods of moving image and photography, which I have developed over the course of my degree in Fine Art, I intend to further explore the performative aspects of daily routine and interactions with household objects as a means of understanding their emotional power in spite of their mundanity.

Furthermore, I volunteered as a 2020 Degree Show Fundraiser in which I organised and promoted events such as an Art Auction and a Drink and Draw. In total, we raised over £1000 for the degree show.
