I am so grateful to have been given the opportunity to paint this gorgeous model. She has recently suffered from breast cancer and I was incredibly overwhelmed by the powerful photos she sent me.
Whilst working on this painting, I explored a technique called Impasto, which is where paint is applied to a specific area of the surface in very thick layers. This technique provides texture and a more realistic representation of the depth within an image.

I am so thankful to have been given the chance to work with the same model again. I experimented with the use of distemper in the background to create warm, deep tonal values. I chose to use bright, vibrant colours to represent the beauty and life within the figure and worked from dark to light. In addition to this, I used sand within the painting to create a more accurate representation of the model's skin texture.
Mediums: Oil paint, sand, acrylic gel medium and turmeric.

This painting aims to subtly normalise stretch marks and blemishes on the skin. The model is proudly showing the parts of her body which she usually keeps hidden, due to society’s unrealistic expectations of one's appearance.

I aspire to normalise commonly hidden realities of the human body, through oil paintings.
Within my exploration of Fine Art, I have developed skills in manipulating oil paints to represent the fleshy tones and textures found within the human figure. I found strengths in painting macro figurative nudes, in a semi-realistic style. These nudes explore frequently hidden features of the human body, such as scars, skin folds and stretch marks; commonly perceived as unsightly and therefore, hidden from daily life and photographs. I have explored how the perception of human bodies has been tainted by society’s increasingly unrealistic expectations of beauty, and I set about challenging these social norms through painting reality as opposed to glamour.
After finishing my degree I intend to work on painting commissions and, ultimately, grow my own business and platform for my work. I am also interested in advertising, photography, photo-editing and social media marketing. I intend to explore these industries further and will be starting by doing some work experience with an Art Director and Creative Content Producer.
