Hand Dyed Colourful Yarn

7 ply Organic Cotton hand dyed to use in my initial warp. Hand-dying allows specific and unique colour combinations that stem from the colour palette and really add to the final samples.

Digital Charcoal Study

Looking at colour proportion and texture in this digital drawing. More saturated colour in larger areas, the colour mixing in this drawing is reminiscent of when warp painting causes a layered effect.

Secondary Warp Samples

Supporting pieces that contrast with the thickness and texture of the initial woven samples. A much lighter weight yarn with the use of 6/30s Combed Cotton and 2/17s Lambswool, this allows for a breath of fresh air between the what can be quite bright and intense first warp. When displayed together, these varying pieces will enhance the differences between the two. The scale of stripes and painting changes through the samples to allow for some variety in composition.

Digital Weave Composition

This is one of the digital compositions I created to aid in planning my samples. I have found it is effective as a wall hanging, creating visual interest and a shift from the texture and three-dimensional qualities of the woven samples.

Further Initial Samples

More experimentation in weft yarn stripe in this sample, coupled with the strong ombre in the slub cloth works well with the small scale zig-zag lifting plan I have implemented in this samples. A slightly less textural sample than some of the others breaks up the intensity of colour and tactility.

Drawing inspiration from painting and digital drawing, in order to create expressive woven textiles.

Throughout this Introspection, I chose to focus on an area of visual research that I have explored in the past but wanted to look at in more depth through the context of a textile. Portraiture is fascinating as it describes the human condition through expression, mark-making and colour. Furthermore, self-portraiture is a personal exploration of one's sense of self and emotion. Coming through a pandemic having spent a lot of time alone, this was an opportunity to give a tangible definition to feeling. In this instance, the context for my work is comfort and cosiness in an interior setting. Opposing textures highlight the softness vs the hard interior, giving light to striking pieces that are inherently touchable.

Introspection - Looking Inwards to Inspire the Outwards
