Third place, Busy Bees 'Remembering John' Portrait competition
Benjamin Wilshaw-Quinn
My practice is mainly focused in painting and drawing.
I am experienced in painting drawing and various forms of printmaking. My work is predominantly naturalistic depictions of people and animals. In my final year my focus has been on portraiture exploring identity, personality and character in my work as well as having completed a dissertation on the subject: Characterization: A practice-led critical analysis of how artists convey a convincing sense of character for male figures. My work has been a personal exploration of people close to me, utilizing lived experience to visualize a recognizable sense of their identity. Entering competitions alongside my university work has enabled me to further develop my approach to a subject, working to a brief and pushing me to improve my draftsmanship and technical abilities in order to make my work stand out. I hope to be able to continue my practice, especially in portraiture, continuing to build upon my success and development through my studies as well as by securing commissioned work.
