GROW - Gardening Game
40% of parents in the UK do not feel confident to plant with their child despite almost all being aware of the variety of benefits gardening has. To address this problem, GROW has been created to help develop an interest in gardening for both adults and children, regardless of their experience and access to a garden. Each player has their own plant and pot. By answering gardening related questions correctly, the user aims to be the first to complete their plant and win the game.
GROW - Plant and Player Pot
The plant is made up of 5 colourful Silicone rubber pieces which fit together to form a plant that sits in a pot made out of Bamboo.
Concept Vehicle Top
This project was carried out to improve my understanding of Rhinoceros (CAD software) while making an element that could be injection moulded. It taught me many skills regarding the software's capabilities and the design style used by my placement company. I have permission to use this image from LEGO as it is a concept model.
BORAS - An Adjustable Home Workout Bench with Storage
After researching why exercise decreased during lockdowns in the UK, BORAS was created as a solution to limited home space and lower disposable income. The design offers a combination of a gym workout bench and furniture piece for the home all-in-one package. Wheels and a handle help to reposition the piece for multipurpose spaces in the home. This was created as part of a one-week live project brief.
GROW - Playing Cards
Card categories were created to offer variation in gameplay while card difficulty ratings allow questions to be asked to the right person, for instance, a difficulty rating of 4-card would not be asked to a 6-year-old. This is to make the gameplay as fair as possible for both adults and children. Varying questions and difficulty help develop learning by playing the game while encouraging multiple playthroughs.
GROW - Exploded View of a Player Pot
The player pot shape was decided on after multiple iterations were discussed and shared in online focus groups and interviews. Its curved vase-like shape offers something different to what is currently available for child gardening related products. This has the potential to not just be used as a game but also as a display piece suitable for the home, leading to a minimalistic recyclable packaging design.
GROW - Scenario Board
A scenario board of GROW being used to enhance both child and adults interest in gardening and the natural world.
GROW - Prototype Model
3D printed parts were used to create a high fidelity model. These parts were used to aid self-testing and evaluation of the product.
Horatio Turner
My approach to projects is with the intention of creating something different but while meeting user needs driven by research.
For my final year project, I wanted to create something which would build on what I learnt while on placement. I have a particular interest in using CAD and rendering software to help visualise my products, using this alongside 3D printing to help develop concepts while understanding them in a physical form. This process is how I like to develop my projects and something I hope to continue to do in the future.
Final year project
To Develop an Interest in Gardening for Children and Parents Through an Educational and Entertaining Experience.
Work Experience
I spent my placement year working at LEGO SYSTEM A/S as an Element Design Intern. This largely consisted of concept generation using CAD and rapid prototyping to test each design iteration. This helped provide me with a greater understanding of the product development process. I have tried to implement what I learnt on placement into my own work which led to me purchasing my own 3D printer. I use this regularly for my university work and personal projects and enjoy experimenting with different materials.
