Scanwash - Encouraging Handwashing Compliance
Scanwash is a hospital system that looks to reduce Healthcare-Associated Infections by encouraging more frequent handwashing among medical staff. Healthcare-Associated Infections can be a serious threat to life and handwashing is proven to be the most effective way to combat them. With some studies recording Healthcare Workers washing their hands just half the amount of times that they should be, there is a clear need for a system like Scanwash to improve handwashing compliance in medical settings.
The Scanner
The scanning screen uses Fluorescence Spectroscopy to identify specified pathogens on the hands of the Healthcare Worker. Readings are taken on both sides of the staff member's hands within 8 seconds. The Healthcare Worker will then receive an alert through their buzzer if pathogens have been detected.
The Buzzer
The buzzer is to be kept on each staff member at all times during their shift through their choice of clip or keychain. It will alert the Healthcare Worker through vibrations and flashing LED strip when they walk past one of the screens, thus prompting them to scan their hands.
The Charging Station
The charging station shown is where the buzzers are docked when not in use. Charging stations will vary in size depending on the size of the ward and the number of staff. The Healthcare Worker must simply touch their employee card on the scanner provided, and a buzzer will be released, this allows the individual's data to be collected and tracked.
App Interfaces
In order to encourage compliance with the system, tracking individual and team performance is available through the app. The app also allows for infection control to monitor where contaminants have been identified throughout the hospital, meaning they can be contained easier.
Ideation and Prototyping
The water drop shaped buzzer is manufactured with minimal dirt traps and conveniently clips or fits into a pocket without disturbing the Healthcare Worker in their usual duties. These were some of the key design constraints during the ideation and prototyping process.
The System
The Scanwash charging stations are to be stored in locker staff rooms, so they are stored away from the public. The buzzers are wirelessly charged with the charging coil running through the small pegs that protrude from the main unit.

Work Experience
Wrapology - Working as an artwork at a luxury packaging company, I was responsible for generating ideas, changing graphics and prototyping samples. Before then communicating engineer drawings to the China team for mass production.
BW Design - Operating as a freelance graphic designer, specialising in logo and brand identity design. Working closely with start up companies, helping to create their brand guidelines, designing company documents and building websites.
Tin Horse - Tin Horse is a packaging company which focuses primarily on the ‘transformation’ of consumer goods. In the time I was there I was involved in research into sustainability, initial ideation and prototype manufacture/presentation to clients.
