AQUAtest – An advanced chlorine testing system
AQUAtest is a device that automates free chlorine, total chlorine and pH tests in an effort to reduce interaction with the user. Lifeguards most commonly perform these tests and with current devices, testing can take up to 15 minutes per pool. A study into 180 drowning incidents that resulted in litigation (1998-2008) attributed the following as some of the main reasons these incidents occurred; lifeguards not being attentive, performing unrelated chores & being distracted by other persons.
Supporting App Interface
The majority of chlorine testing devices offer no way of logging previous results which has led to records being filed on paper. From primary research, it is understood that paper-based records getting lost, wet & damaged is a frequent occurrence. The app interface was made to communicate how AQUAtest would sync all test results when it is plugged into recharge.
Home Exercise System
The exercise system was created in response to current home gym equipment looking unaesthetic and out of place. Google search trends show a huge spike in the phrases “gym equipment”, “indoor exercise” and “home workout” as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. The system is versatile enough to train the major muscle groups eliminating the need for a variety of equipment.
Proof of Concept - AQUAtest
By using an Arduino Uno, the fundamental code and components needed for the concept can be established and tested. This communicates functionality and informs further design decisions regarding the internals of a product and how they are mounted.
Home Exercise System
The system uses natural materials that complement home furniture. By using a fan to create resistance through the water, the result is a relaxing sloshing sound when in use. This contrasts the often loud and obnoxious sounds associated with gym equipment.

Pushing boundaries is something that comes naturally to me; I believe exposure to failure and critical analysis is paramount to the design process

Work Experience
Orbit Float is a manufacturer of sensory deprivation tanks. During my placement year, I was heavily involved with the construction of electronic components, liaising with suppliers and meeting tight deadlines. I had the opportunity to travel to Galway and Berlin to install and perform maintenance tasks on customers’ tanks. The experience was very beneficial in teaching me the process of manufacturing and installing a product in a professional setting.
