BRULE - battling the elements

A Peltier cooling system allows Brule to control the internal temperature of the smoke chamber - enabling users to cold smoke in any ambient weather condition by transferring heat from inside to out.

BRULE - hot or cold

A vertical stack arrangement and insertable insulation mean users no longer have to have a product for each hot and cold smoking.

Drift - improving the sleep experience for children with sever hearing impairment.

Focussing on the key parameters that children with hearing impairment find comforting, Drift champions healthy sleeping habits; improving the wellbeing of both child and parent. Comprised of a dock and pebble - the child and parent have a set each, with an app aimed at the parent. Drift focuses on 4 parameters proven to improve the sleep experience for hearing impaired children: routine, grounding, stimulation and parental connection.

Drift - healthy connection

Stimulation and parental connection are provided by the wireless pairing between each pebble. As the parent interacts with the pebble, sensors within the casing translate squeezing into low-frequency vibrations in the corresponding area of the child’s pebble and vice versa - providing sensory stimulation and connection.

Drift - routine

A bedtime routine can be set by the parent through the integrated app, providing consistency around bedtime for the child and helping the parent to ensure their child is getting a good amount of sleep each night. The child is given achievement badges for going to bed on time or going back to sleep by themselves after awake in the night.

Sebastian Howard

I'm a multidisciplinary who strives to design solutions that empower users in their everyday lives.

My work is driven by my passion for user-centred design. Working at IBM strengthened my approach to solving complex problems and showed me the power of focussing on insight-led solutions. I identified that the outdoor cooking experience had not been iterated in terms of its user experience and had largely been untouched by developments in technology. Throughout my career so far, my passion for design has evolved to have a distinct focus User Experience Design, where I believe as a designer I can have a positive impact on the way we all live our lives.

Final year project

Enabling enthusiastic home-cooks to smoke food in a controlled way.

Work Experience

I spent my placement year working at IBM as a user experience designer within the App Connect design team. Delivering a conversion of the product to a new design system, and implementing 2 new features; I solved complex, live business problems, building empathy and designing for an impact on real users. The experience showed me the power of a user-focused approach to design and has led me to develop a great interest in digital design and the desire to follow a career in User Experience.

Whilst completing my final year, I took on the role of UX and branding designer for the angel investment network, King's Alumni Angel Network. This allowed me to continue building on skills learnt whilst at IBM through designing the website and defining the brand style guide and design system.
