Kanna
The decline of British wildlife is an ongoing problem in the UK and the lack of nature based education and reliance on technology for the younger generation is a key aspect of this. Kanna is a pair of smart binoculars, allowing kids to explore their natural green spaces and complete challenges and tasks by linking to an app. This encourages kids to find and learn about nature in their local area by turning this educative experience into a technology based game.
Kanna- Internal Components
Kanna uses smart technology to overlay a virtual readout of time, temperature, current task and nearby bird calls over the binoculars live view. It does this through the use of traditional optical lens with CMOS sensors placed behind. The sensors transfer the image to an OLED display screen at the back in real time, whilst an onboard temperature sensor and microphone inform the display readout. The small on-board processor links to a phone to allow the user to take photographs, update tasks, and identify the plants, bugs and animals found.
Kanna- App
The Kanna app links to the binoculars to allow the parents to set appropriate tasks for their child as well as to keep a log of photos taken and animals collected. Using characters and a 'collect them all' style game, the user is encouraged to find and photograph local wildlife in order to unlock the AR character and their fact file.
Kanna- Prototype
During the design process for Kanna, a prototype was manufactured. Using 3D printing technology, the casings and components were made, enabling development of sizes and fit as well as incorporating fasteners and design for manufacture.

A week long project involving a brief from Panasonic Flux to design for 'Better Relationships'. During the Covid-19 pandemic especially, mothers experiencing post natal depression have struggled to overcome these feelings whilst still being able to look after their baby and bond with them. The bond between a mother and baby can be crucial for their relationship in the long term. Link enables the mother's warmth and pulse to be felt by the baby and vice versa, even when apart. This allows mum to take a rest and time for herself whilst still giving care and love to her child.

I believe that designers have an important role in changing the future of product consumerism and waste, to help both the natural world and the inhabitants of it to lead healthier and more simple lives.
