London households have an average recycling rate of just 33%, this is the lowest rate across the UK which has an average of 45%. The challenge that households face is that they lack key information that would otherwise improve their rate of recycling. Many young professions are part of a throwaway culture but with a better understanding of recycling and the consequences of their actions their behaviour can change to one that is more sustainable long term as well as short term.

By scanning the QR Code on the selected packaging, ReSet cross-references the waste materials provided by the manufacturers with the recycling rules provided by the local waste services. This provides users with detailed recycling information, erasing any decision making doubt.
Furthermore, behavioural change is created through ownership and responsibility, the app helps to form a deep understanding between the user, their household waste, and their disposal of it.
Three specific design features are integrated into the app to create a sense of ownership and responsibility;
- Gamification
- Extrinsic and Intrinsic rewards system
- Optimised user journey

ReSet is an application that helps people to identify what packaging is recyclable in their Borough and to then dispose of their waste correctly.
I am a designer with innate curiosity who loves a challenge and being part of a creative team. As well as, a passion for experience design, I have a fascination with learning about behavioural design on social media and the role played by algorithms. I believe it is important for today’s designer to understand the potential impact that poorly designed products can have on individuals and society.
