My practice is keenly engaged with the discourse of painting through a concentration on material and historical concerns.
By concentrating on the details of the painted surface, my practice explores the medium of paint through the language of abstraction. With a strong emphasis on colour, my work seeks to interrogate conventional materials and processes of paintings, and thereby notice how these elements impact what is perceived. Created on a large scale, the paintings produce an immersive experience for the viewer and draw attention to the subtleties of the painted plane.
While the principal attention is given to the materiality of paint, my practice references a wide variety of historical sources including the approach of American Abstraction, Absurdist Literature, and Ancient Egyptian Belief Systems. The result of this synthesis of ideas are paintings which often evoke in the viewer personal responses and introspective contemplation.
